How do we adjust pregnant women?
What happens when you see a chiropractor when you’re pregnant?
Initial Consultation:
After a thorough health history and physical exam, your chiropractor gains an understanding of your needs. If you are an existing patient, your chiropractor already knows of your needs and will continue to care for your changing body by tailoring techniques to suit you at every stage of the pregnancy.
Pregnancy Pillow:
As your belly grows, we can still accommodate you lying face down via the use of a “belly pillow”, which cradles the pregnant belly and allows you to lie on your front comfortably. This way we can continue to check your spine and adjust you in the prone position.
Gentle Techniques:
All our chiropractors utilize many different adjusting techniques like Diversified, Thomson-Drop, Gonstead and use hand held adjusting instruments such as an activator or Impulse iQ. Most use a combination of techniques each visit to suit you and the stage of your pregnancy.
Webster’s Technique:
This is a pregnancy-specific technique that all of our chiropractors are trained in. It involves correcting any dysfunction present at the sacrum which allows improvement in neuro biomechanical function of the area. It is followed by a gentle release of tension which may be present at the “round ligament” which supports the uterus.
How often?
Your chiropractor will provide you with a specific care plan based on your presentation and needs. This varies between individuals and is based on many factors as we tailor your care plan to your specific needs.
Spinal joint dysfunction can be present prior to your pregnancy so the ideal time to get your spine checked is before you’re pregnant or as early as possible during your pregnancy so you can experience the best possible benefits of chiropractic care.
