Sports and Injury Prevention

How good is sport?! The rush of competition, the marvels of athleticism, the satisfaction of success, the team camaraderie. Sport is a fantastic pass time, either socially or professionally, and is something that most people have partaken in at some point in their lives. No matter what level we participate at, one of the ever-present risks of sport is injuries.

Obviously there are certain circumstances where injuries are unavoidable, but for the most part there are steps we can take to prevent an injury from occurring. Many professional athletes use chiropractic care for injury prevention - all 32 professional American Football teams competing in the NFL have a Doctor of Chiropractic on their staff. Regardless of the level of athletic performance, ensuring the body is able to operate in an efficient and sustainable way is essential to ensuring optimal performance and longevity of health.

The main causes of injury, even in the most seasoned of athletes, are:

  1. Excessive training

  2. Poor/incorrect form + training methods

  3. Muscle imbalances/weakness.

When we take a closer look at the anatomy of the human body, we immediately see that everything is intricately interconnected. Muscles, ligaments and tendons all connect, control and stabilise bones and joints. The spine is so crucial to our overall movement that even a small misalignment or area of dysfunction in the spine can lead to unnecessary tension in one part of the body and over time, this can result in injuries such as sprains/strains, ruptures, tears and chronic muscle fatigue.

Chiropractic allows the spine and body to operate as efficiently and sustainably as possible, meaning you can work to reach your optimum on the sports field. Chiropractic care may help in the following areas:

  1. Increased range of motion

  2. Promote faster healing

  3. Improvements in balance and coordination

  4. Increased energy levels

Whether you’re an athlete, or someone who exercises as part of a proactive health regime, you can greatly benefit from chiropractic care for injury prevention.
